Pig scours (piglet diarrhoea) is an important cause of piglet mortality. Next to that, it results in poor growth and poor performance, and a lot of work for the farmer. Scours should be prevented by reducing exposure through hygiene and increasing immunity of the piglets. Once scours occurs, it will result in dehydration, a disturbed electrolyte balance and a negative energy balance.
Most causes of scours are self-limiting: the animal will clear the organisms from its system, unless the dehydration resulting from the diarrhoea kills the piglet before it recovers. For this reason, a product that corrects dehydration and acidosis and restores their energy balance should be offered.
